SUGAR MAPLE TAPPING

 ?SUGAR MAPLE TAPPING Minimum Age 7th ?grade Learn to identify the sap-producing trees in our area. ? Identify and make your own spiles from elderberry shoots. You will become involved with the complete tapping project, from selecting trees to tapping and boiling down the sap. ? Each participant will make a pint of maple syrup and enjoy some at the pancake supper. ? Students are encouraged to visit S&S Sugarbush during their open house April 18-20. ? Students in groups 1 & 2 will also collect sap once between March 10-14. ? Students in groups 3 & 4 will collect sap once between March 17-21

  1. I am in the maple tapping program. We boiled our sap yesterday, march 22. We had near 50 gallons of sap which may produce up to over 1 gallon of syrup. To boil the sap we used a barrel stove with a large pan filled with sap over it. My group was in the morning so it was not done boiling when we left so I hope it turns out.

  2. We attended the Maple tapping wrap up session with one of our sons last night. Participants and parents were there. We had a dinner of pancakes with Maple syrup boiled by the kids which was very good. Even better, each participant stood up and told us about their individual efforts to tap trees and make syrup. They tapped soft maples and hard maples and even boxelders. The results were as varied as each individual. It brought back memories of when I was in the very same program more than 30 years ago. Back then I could never have imagined…
